After a glorious day in Paris, we finally arrived in Crete. Although tired, we were looking forward to the next 8 days. We had arranged for a private guide to take us around Western Crete in search of Byzantine Churches and Frescoes, scenic and unusual spots for photography. Our guide was fantastic and delivered a lot more than we hoped for. We ate, we laughed and, we saw some spots and met locals we would not have otherwise had a chance to meet. We ate fresh cheese at a local cheese factory, ate food fresh out of the fire.
Day one delivered 1 small church on the site of an old monastery, a minoan tomb, several closed Byzantine churches, the old fort at Aptera, a 3-vaulted Roman cistern, Venetian wells, and the most incredible seaside walk at dusk in Almirida.
Let's not forget a lunch fit for a king. Greek salad, escargot in tomatoes, with sides of freshly made bread, frites, and yoghurt with honey. Incredible. And the incredible coffee in Almirida.
