Yesterday, we decided that hiking from Sougia to Lissos might a bit much. 2.5 hours each way with no guarantee of the Church being open and seeing the frescoes. While Lissos is a beautiful place, I wanted a last chance at seeing some frescoes. So, at Jean's suggestion we headed for Anidri. We find the Church, my frescoes and the most serene view of the coast.
I am sharing some of what I saw with you. Just imagine seeing in relatively great shape images painted between ca 843 and 1400. It is awesome. I am also including a sample of the floor mosaic which is also from the Byzantine Period.
The Byzantine church of Agios Georgios-Agios Nikolaos frescoes were painted by Ioannis Pagomenos in 1323. The church has two aisles separated with arches in between, and it also has a transverse aisle, thus forming crosses externally.
This was an exciting day and we did hit the mother lode.
