From day 1, we began noticing these little houses (metal, wood or cement) on the side of the roads, some of them were simple, some were elaborate, some were replicas of churches nearby. They reminded us of the roadside memorials in Mexico, and California in Mexican neighborhoods. Our guide explained that they were memorials and shrines, they all had something in common, the icons, the oil lamps and/or wax candles. In some, the lamp were lit or the candle burning, indicating that someone had just been praying.
